Shiman Zhang

Melbourne-based guzheng performer and educator

Musical discipline from the age of four

Shiman began learning guzheng at four with Lou Yinlan, whose own teacher was the renowned performer and composer Wang Changyuan.

She later received direct instruction from Wang Changyuan—composer of the landmark guzheng work Battle Against Typhoon—adding first-hand insight from one of the instrument’s most influential modern voices.

Shiman entered the Bachelor of Music Performance (Guzheng) programme at Fujian Normal University as the top-ranked applicant. Her undergraduate training under Xu Bing consolidated advanced technique, repertoire, ensemble work and stage performance.

High standards can still feel human.

01

Clarity

Technique is broken into understandable, achievable steps so progress never feels mysterious.

02

Individuality

Repertoire, pace and feedback are adapted to the student rather than forced into a single template.

03

Expression

Students learn to shape sound, phrasing and meaning—not simply reproduce the notes on the page.
